To me, what really makes a game fun is a mix of good rules, entertainment, challenges, theme, graphics and materials along with a bit of concreteness and a huge amount of subjectivity. What really makes the difference between a success and an average game is sometimes something not really well defined that deals with the great mystery of what is fun.
